Canada Post labour disruption could impact life insurance enrolment

Saskatchewan health-sector employees looking to add to their life insurance coverage should make sure to send in application forms via email to EBP@3sHealth.ca instead of traditional mail.

3sHealth is currently offering an open enrolment period to benefit plan members wishing to add extra coverage under their optional life insurance plan. However, to qualify for this open enrolment window, 3sHealth must receive the member’s application forms by June 30, 2025.

This deadline could be impacted by the on-going labour dispute between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), which represents Canada Post’s employees. As of Monday, May 26, CUPW had initiated strike action and enacted a nationwide ban on overtime work. While the two continue to negotiate, there is a chance that the situation could escalate in the weeks ahead.

While benefit plan members have the option to send in forms through traditional mail, submitting via email is a much quicker option that will avoid any potential impacts of this or future disruptions to mail service that could be caused by this labour dispute.

Increasing your coverage

This limited-time opportunity to expand optional life insurance coverage includes the ability to add up to $150,000 to a member’s own Optional Life coverage without medical evidence of insurability, up to $50,000 of Spousal Optional Life coverage without medical evidence, and up to $250,000 of single or family Voluntary Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage without medical evidence.

Plan members qualify for this open enrolment offer if they are:

  • Currently enrolled in the Group Life Insurance Plans administered by 3sHealth;
  • Actively at work;
  • Under the age of 65;
  • Have not previously retired; and
  • Currently have less than $150,000 of Employee Optional Life Insurance coverage.

Please note that plan members who have applied for Employee Optional Life Insurance in the past and been denied by the insurer will not be eligible.

A member’s spouse will qualify if the member is currently enrolled in the Group Life plan, actively at work, and both are under the age of 65.

Plan members may purchase up to $500,000 of Employee Optional Life and $150,000 of Spousal Optional Life insurance. To purchase additional coverage, plan members and/or their spouse must provide medical evidence of their insurability, and their application is subject to approval by the insurer.

Purchasing more coverage after June 30

While this open enrolment opportunity ends on June 30, 2025, plan members can add coverage any time. However, if the member is past their first 90 days of enrolment in the plan, they will have to submit an evidence of insurability form, and their application will be subject to the approval of the insurer.
